Formula 1 champion elect Lewis Hamilton has revealed the first words of Vettel after Lewis Hamilton clinched his fifth Formula 1 world title at the Mexican Grand Prix, following a season-long battle with the German.
Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton were very closely matched through the first half of the 2018 Formula 1 season, and the lead at the top of the table changed during various occasions, however after Vettel crashed out from the lead at his home race in Germany, Hamilton gradually ran away with the title – with the German winning just one of the last eight races after that.
Hamilton and Vettel shared a moment together at the post-race celebrations in Mexico when Hamilton sealed the title, and the now five time world champion Lewis Hamilton revealed that Vettel told him “I need you fighting with me next year”, as the British driver beat Vettel to the most successful driver on the F1 grid.
“He came over and, the one thing he said was: ‘Just don’t let off, I need you fighting with me next year’ – which I respect, naturally,” Hamilton said.
“I think for me, I just said, thank you so much for being such a strong competitor this year. But it happens so fast so I don’t remember everything we said, but ultimately it was a true showing of great sportsmanship and respect between us, as I think has been there all year long.
“I think that’s great to have in multiple world champions, two competitors who’ve gone head-to-head. It’s been a hard year. He’s fought so well this year and I know he drove fantastically well today and I know he’d going to go from strength to strength.
“I’ve got to stay on my toes and make sure I keep trying to come back with a good blow in the future.”
