Struggling Jolyon Palmer has reportedly been offered a “sizable sum” to leave the Renault Formula 1 team after the Singapore Grand Prix, despite his contract running him all the way to the 2017 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Follow the engine saga, F1’s silly season went into full force – as Red Bull loaned Carlos Sainz to Renault for the 2018 season, however it is now being reported by reputable sources that Renault have offered Palmer an incentive to leave Enstone after the Singapore Grand Prix, which will allow Sainz to start off at Renault at the next race in Malaysia.
However, this depends on Palmer agreeing to the deal, and a confirmation of this is expected to be released to world media on Wednesday.
It is understood that this move is focussed on the constructors’ championship, which will greaten Renault’s chances of making up a place or two in the championship – potentially against Toro Rosso by getting Sainz early.
Should the move work, it is understood that Gasly is likely to take over the Toro Rosso seat for rest of the Formula 1 2017 season, with no other alternatives at Toro Rosso’s disposal. However, whilst evaluating Gasly’s progress, Toro Rosso will assess its options for the 2018 season, with Saint certain to be at Renault next year – following an official confirmation.
